| Paintings by the Running Meter sheds light on the history of painting by providing a chronological overview. On one side of the "ruler" a gorgeous selection of full color paintings evokes the history of art over the past 2000 years. On the verso, artistic movements are detailed by epoch; from Roman funeral art and mosaics in the first centuries AD, throughout the works of Islamic, Chinese and Mayan art into the Renaissance and onto the modern era. Details of eyes and hands are recurring motifs throughout the two milleniums.
Information about individual works of art are placed in historical context according to the period and artist, title of the work, technique and the year of creation.
